While Paul Margocsy’s precise realism and faithfulness to nature is truly remarkable, it is his intuitive understanding of birds, his inscrutable feathered friends, coupled with his incisive eye and masterly skill with the brush that stands him alone in this chosen discipline.
These extraordinary homages to the avian world possess an artistic and creative quality that is all too rare these days – an innate ability to capture the moment, reveal the delicate relationship existing between his subject and its environment, and at once leave the viewer with the feeling of being committed to protecting birds and their living sanctuary – at all costs.
At a time when much of art seems fashionable, superficial and lost, Paul is a breath of fresh air for his unbridled passion and reverence for the subject as object, for his bravery in finding new solutions to old compositional challenges in representational painting, and for the quiet drama and intrigue he elucidates in his vignettes of birds captured in paint while simply going about their daily courting, flying, fussing, chirping and singing their eternal choruses.
This recent series of works highlights the glory and wonder of birds in a more dynamic and forward field manner, similar to the theatricality of a cinematic close-up – one can see the feathers float the breeze frozen in flight, the sharp incisive eyes watching, preying and witnessing, plumage scintillating in rarified light, and the togetherness of various handfuls of birds at home fluffed-up sharing a branch.
