Carmel Mahony studied extensively with Shirley Bourne and considers that she matured as an artist because of Shirley’s meticulous and challenging tuition.
Carmel has had a long experience as an oil painter, taking portrait commissions and producing many still life paintings and interiors. Her plein air works cover rural Victoria, Melbourne and coastal areas in particular the Mornington Peninsula.
She has held three solo exhibitions and has participated in several group shows receiving many awards and commendations during her career. Her work is represented in private collections throughout Australia, in the UK and also in the USA where she has painted commissions.
Carmel teaches oil painting at Malvern Artists’ Society teaching traditional oil painting, Carmel expects her students to paint from life, to paint truthfully and continually strive to improve their work. Carmel has regular private classes in Melbourne and Blairgowrie. She also conducts occasional classes and workshops at the Wangaratta Artists’ Society and other art groups.
Carmel is a member of the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptures and Malvern Artists’ Society and is a regular exhibitor with both.
