Carmel Mahony

Carmel Mahony studied extensively with Shirley Bourne and considers that she matured as an artist because of Shirley’s meticulous and challenging tuition.

Carmel has long experience as an oil painter, taking portrait commissions and producing many still life paintings and interiors. Her plein air works cover rural Victoria, Melbourne and coastal areas, in particular the Mornington Peninsula.

She has held three solo exhibitions and has participated in several group shows, receiving many awards and commendations.  Her work is represented in private collections throughout Australia, in the UK and also in the USA where she has painted commissions. She is a member of the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors and Malvern Artists’ Society and is a regular exhibitor with both.

Carmel teaches traditional oil painting at Malvern Artists’ Society. She expects her students to paint from life, to paint truthfully, and to continually strive to improve their work. Carmel has retired from her popular weekly class, but conducts regular workshops at MAS. Her workshops typically include model/s (and a still life option).

Enquiries about Carmel’s next workshop at MAS are welcome.
