Susan Obrien

Ceramics had been my artistic outlet for most of my adult life after graduating from Melbourne’s RMIT, with exhibitions in both Victoria and New South Wales.

Having two boys and managing a career in pottery, then decorated wood works, it became a case of very late nights and a fast and furious lifestyle. Very enjoyable! A move from country St Andrews to Eltham decided new adventures. So began my decision to further my painting which had been a number of subjects within my RMIT Fellowship Course. Pleasure turned to a passion.

Two exhibitions at the Cafe Julia – Melbourne; a couple at a lovely Wine Bar in Eaglemont; and at Bridges Restaurant saw a progression in my style and my application of the paint. I still have great challenges ahead, which makes painting and teaching so rewarding. I’m sure other painters will agree with this sentiment. It’s what keeps us all aspiring for that elusive perfect “work of art”.

Susan teaches all aspects of acrylic painting.  This class is ideal for beginners or those wanting to explore different techniques. Susan has an eclectic style using bold colours and will usually start the class with a quick demonstration and then students have a go at applying that on canvas. This class is led by Susan following her structure, however there are times when students can be free to do their own work. She encourages students to learn the skills to paint loose and quick, to be spontaneous, and to work within a deadline.
