MAS Spring Exhibition 2024

Best in Show

Winner

“Late Afternoon Light”
by Helene Oberman

Trees have been depicted for centuries what is there left to say. The artist successfully took this challenge. We are drawn in the infinite details of this print, the evening light that emanates from it. I want to sit in the grass and disappear in the abstract-ness of this work. What a beautiful piece.

Best Still Life / Flora & Fauna

Winner

“Quince Harvest”
by Isabelle McKenzie

A Lovely play on light, gently rendered through the use of great technical skills. The colours, the composition and the abundance of fruits make for a great painting.

Highly Commended

“Tools of Trade”
by Isabelle McKenzie

The unusual topic and neatly arranged composition call for attention. Though there is a lot of metallic objects and surfaces depicted in this work, the artist has managed to give it warmth and softness.

Best Figure / Portrait

Winner

“Mending the Nets”
by Tegan Colliver

So much is encapsulated in this work though only the necessary is painted, leaving a lot of space for the viewer to feel the warm afternoon, the soft chatter and the patience it takes to fix the net.

Highly Commended

“Victoria”
by Katherine Betts

A classic portrait that takes us outside the frame – What is Victoria looking at?

Best Abstract / 3D

Winner

“Looking Up At The Tree”
by Fiona Lerk

The delicate shades of grey call the viewer to watch closely. The scale of the artwork, the details, and subtle perspective effect draws us in. One can keep on looking endlessly at this well crafted abstract drawing.

Highly Commended

“Echoes of Droughts”
by Terry O’Keeffe

The textures, melting into one another. How satisfying to look at. It must have been a great experimenting moment. There’s also something ancient about this painting that will resonate with the wise in us.

Best Landscape / Seascape

Winner

“Wategos Beach”
by Margaret Picken

Great variety of techniques, each one used with care to render the many subjects. The sand feels soft and warm, the swimmers rest, the rock stands strong while the sky keeps on calling us to observe. The overall sense of quiet makes it an arresting piece.

Highly Commended

“Signals”
by Geoff Cook

The technique and subject matter works together beautifully to achieve a balanced composition in which each negative space has been carefully considered. Unusual and creative.
